Cape Town

We arrived in Cape Town on April 12 for a 2 day stop over. We decided before hand that we weren’t going to do a tour with the ship but just do things on our own. It was nice change to have a lot of time to do and see things and not feel rushed at all.

The port in Cape Town was very convenient. We could walk right off the ship and right along the water front were all sorts of shops, restaurants and a fairly large mall. It was a very beautiful city. From our ship we could see Table Mountain which as the name suggests resembles a table. It was really interesting to see in person and often a cloud covers the top of the mountain which the locals call the table cloth. You can take a cable car to the top of the mountain but we decided that all we needed were the pictures from our ship. Not far from the harbour was a stadium which was used for the recent World Cup.

On our first day we decided to stay close to the ship and just walk around for a while. There were lots of neat little shops with lots of good local crafts, t-shirts and all sorts of things. We finally made our way to the V & A Waterfront Craft Centre. It was a large building that sold mostly handmade crafts, necklaces, paintings, etc from locals. After picking up a few things from there we went to the mall before deciding we wanted to see the South African Penguin.

The penguins were l in a place called Simons Town which was a 45 minute drive away. They have walkways set up all the way down to the beach and the penguins were all over the place. You could see them nestled on either side of you as you walked further down to the beach where the majority of them were. After the penguins that was about it for the day.

The following day we decided to walk around again. We had seen a few souvenirs that we had both liked and wanted to pick up a few things. After shopping we decided to eat lunch at a local restaurant. We had fish and chips which were good and then headed back to the ship.
